¿Porqué tomar este tratamiento?
Practicado desde hace 5000 años, el masaje shirodhara proviene de la India y se basa en los antiguos principios de la medicina ayurvédica. Traducido del sánscrito como una ciencia curativa y holística, Ayurveda busca armonizar el cuerpo, la mente y los sentidos.
El Shirodhara es una sofisticada manera de rejuvenecer el alma, alcanzando un grado de relajación y calma inmediatamente. Esta palabra viene de los vocablos sánscritos “shiro”, que significa cabeza y “dhara”, que se entiendo como algo “que fluye”. Esta terapia con peces ha existido desde tiempos remotos y su origen se da en los lejanos territorios turcos. De hecho, la leyenda dice que hace muchos años, un pastor, después de lastimarse el pie, se lavó en una fuente de agua termal y pequeños peces que mordisqueaban su lesión le ayudaron a sanar rápidamente.
Para comenzar la Terapia Velas con Peces, Grand Velas le recibirán primero con el incomparable ritual de bienvenida, en el que lavarán sus pies para después de sumergirlos en un tazón con agua con bondadosas esencias y pétalos de flores naturales.
Luego, colocarán sus pies en un tanque acuario que contiene peces pequeños conocidos como garra rufa, una especie de carpa del tamaño del dedo, que se alimenta de la piel muerta de los pies.
¡Sí! La piel muerta que se acumula en la superficie de los pies es eliminada por completo. Los peces garra rufa tienden a alimentarse por primera vez en los talones o la región donde haya mayor cantidad de células muertas, para después limpiar las áreas alrededor de los dedos del pie, y lo más impresionante es que actúan sin dañar la piel sana.
Contrariamente a lo que se pueda pensar, estos peces no tienen dientes, no lastiman, al contrario, producen una enzima natural con propiedades curativas y regenerativas.

The 2011 top Double Gold Medal Award for interior design went to Melin Castro Ardavin for her work for the Grand Velas Riviera Maya in the Fourth International Forum of Women in Architecture and Interior Design of the Iberoamerican Council of Interior Designers (CIDI). The award, given for the best in Mexico, recognized her body of work for the Grand Velas Rivera Maya’s three hotels within a hotel and the spa. Castro is the Interior Designer and Creative Director for Velas Resorts’ four luxury all inclusives in three destinations in Mexico and also President of MC Design of Guadalajara.
Castro also won two gold awards in the hospitality design category for her interiors for the Riviera Maya property for the three hotels and spa. The awards were given by the Fourth International Forum of CIDI and by the Fifth CIDI International Bienal of Interior Design.
A gold medal in the hospitality category was also given to architectural firm Elias Elias AR for their dramatic architectural design for the Grand Velas Riviera Maya.
“To design the resort with over 1600 feet of beach fronting the Caribbean and 150 acres of mangroves where we needed to create three different ambiances was a challenging and rewarding experience,”said Castro Ardavin. “Much credit for the awards also goes to my talented team, without whom I couldn’t have done this,” she continued.
